Southeast Asia has been an important area historically, politically and linguistically. To promote cooperation with various nations in this area, a real understanding of the languages and cultures of the countries and various ethnic groups in this area is quite essential. The Research Institute for Language and Culture of Asia offers an M.A. Program in Linguistics (Southeast Asian Languages and Linguistics) to train people to be specialists in Southeast Asian languages and linguistics, both theoretical and applied.

An overview of linguistic fields; various branches of linguistics; theoretical linguistics and applied linguistics; phonetics and phonology aspects; morphology and syntax; semantics; discourse analysis; pragmatics; sociolinguistics; historical linguistics; linguistics and language teaching and learning
- LCIC 601 Essence of Research Methodology
Philosophy and main paradigms of research; key issues in researching communication in diverse cultural contexts; research planning; problem identification, research framework; literature review; research methodological approaches; research ethics; and the nature of knowledge obtaining from different research methods and suitability to solve the research problems

The acoustic theory of speech production, physical properties of wave sound, the correlation between acoustic and articulatory phonetics, techniques for the analysis of sound using computer speech analysis softwares, acoustic characterization of consonants and vowels with illustrations from various varlanguages, acoustic features of speech prosody, pitch and duration, techniques for sound recording, digitization, and waveform and spectrographic analysis using the Praat program for a digital speech analysis
